Google admitted that the navigation UI launched last year wasn’t good enough and brought back the black bar (the color is actually dark gray). Some of the features from the old interface are still available: the list of services, the notification and sharing boxes, the settings menu.

“The new design retains many of the feature changes we made in November that proved popular, including a unified search box and Google+ sharing and notifications across Google. The biggest change is that we’ve replaced the drop-down Google menu with a consistent and expanded set of links running across the top of the page,” explains Google.

The black bar doesn’t look that great in Google’s redesigned interfaces, but it’s more functional than the “invisible” menu hidden behind the Google logo. It’s always a bad idea to hide important navigational features, even if they clutter the interface. When you have to explain basic features because they’re not obvious, you’ve already failed:

{ Thanks, Cougar and Matan. }

Counseling in a drug rehabilitation center can be a critical part of recovery from addiction. Therapy with a group can help the patient know that there are others who have experienced similar or worse problems. This group alcohol counseling may bring new coping mechanisms to the surface to help in recovery. This type of therapy can occur in group sessions or individual meetings with specialized therapists.

Rehabilitation

Those who first check in to a rehab facility may be questioning their ability to complete the program initially. After settling in, the patient may find a new rhythm to life with the center’s routines and therapy. The counseling sessions can begin to focus on addictions and the surrounding problems as each person begins to share his or her story.

Consequences Of Addiction

These meetings for counseling may be the first opportunity a patient has to sit down and give some thought to his or her past behavior. The road of addiction may start to become clear during discussions with others, or just listening to what other patients have to say about what led them to seek treatment. This can be enlightening as patients may see similarities between other patients’ stories and their own.

Therapy

As the therapy sessions progress, solutions can start to emerge as he or she considers and focuses more on the problems at hand. These group meetings might be a learning experience as individuals talk about their tips and strategies for coping. The patient may begin to consider new ways to arrange his or her life without falling back into addictive habits.

Changes

Keeping a journal may be part of the therapy and counseling sessions, in which patients may share some of their writings as a cathartic process for healing. These daily writing sessions, perhaps part of the person’s rehab routine, can help in exploring changes occurring in rehab, as well as past problems that may have led to the initial addiction.

Trained Professionals

One-on-one therapy can help further explore issues of addiction. The counselor also can present different ways of looking at situations in a controlled setting to help guide a patient toward a solution-based process. This can help a patient from becoming bogged down in circuitous thoughts that merely focus on problems without resolution.

After Treatment

When the patient is ready to leave the drug rehabilitation treatment facility, counseling sessions may continue as part of extended treatment. These follow-up meetings can be beneficial to help support the patient as he or she continues to make lifestyle changes and adopt new ways of dealing with problems to avoid addictive tendencies. The discussions can help a patient sort through any lingering issues.

This is a simple tutorial for beginners to SSH to a Linux host. This is quite easy with the easy-to-use software freely available but the beginners need a tutorials to start with. Hence, I write this tutorial about how to ssh to a Linux host. This tutorial is for users on Windows.

1. Download a SSH client

I suggest PuTTY. The download link can be found in Open Source and Portable SSH, SCP, SFTP and VNC Clients for Windows to Remote Control Linux (this post also provides links to other software that may be usefull).

2. SSH to the Linux host

At least, the user should already get the host’s name and port for SSH along with the username and password from the administrators.

Then SSH to the Linux host following this tutorial (it is short and easy to follow).

Now, you should have logged in to the Linux host with access to a shell (such as bash) and achieved the goal in this tutorial.

The Bump is back; only this time, sexy new smartphones are doing the dance instead of booty-shakers. Users of iOS and Android mobile devices are being treated to a new phenomenon, created by a tiny business in California called Bump Technologies, Inc. The company employs thirty techies whose passion it is to make life easy for the millions of smartphone users who wish to exchange information.

Imagine you are in Las Vegas for the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The networking amongst colleagues is fast and furious. Instead of having to put down everything you are carrying, pull out your pen and paper, and jot down phone numbers, email addresses, or exchange business cards, you simply “bump” your phone up against the other person’s phone and voila – you have both just shared your contact info!

"Bumping" Money from One Phone to Another with PayPal

The service has been around for a couple years, but the next iteration has some surprises to offer. Users will be able to exchange photos and share personal interests like that being share on social media sites. Money transfer between phones is also enabled thanks to Bump’s partnership with PayPal. Unfortunately, the service is currently unavailable to Blackberry and Windows Phone users.

The intricate dance is manifested by using Cloud software and storage combined with motion-sensing-hardware and GPS features built into today’s mobile devices. When two people touch their phones together, the system recognizes that action as a desire to exchange and automatically sends data to the cloud and then back down to the other device. This saves the user from having to walk through the standard technical steps that prove so confusing to many smartphone owners.

In the following video, Bump CEO, David Lieb, explains the value and the mechanics behind the tricky fun. Thank you, to our great friend Robert Scoble for the enlightening video.

I write a lot latex documents and most of the documents have images in it. Latex deals EPS very well, while sometimes we need to add JPG / PNG images to it. I find converting the JPG images to EPS ones is the most convenient way to embed JPG images to latex documents. On Linux, this is quit easy with ImageMagick.

An online tool is available: JPG to EPS Converter.

You need to install ImageMagick if it is not already installed in the system:

# yum install ImageMagick

Convert image image.jpg from JPG to EPS format:

$ convert image.jpg image.eps

For other image formats, the command is similar.

Even though I use Google Chrome as my primary browser these days, I admit with no hesitation that Firefox completely obliterates every other browser in the plugin/add-on/extension department. To this day, nothing else comes close to the extension options that are available for Firefox.

Some people when browsing just want a simple-as-possible on/off toggle for everything other than text, meaning on/off toggles for everything. Does such a toggle utility exist? In Firefox it does, and it’s called QuickJava.

Contrary to its name, QuickJava is not just for the on/off toggle of Java, as it does do The Big 5 (JavaScript, Java, Flash, Silverlight and images).

How to configure it is as such:

1. Install QuickJava. Use the Firefox browser and click the link above, the install the extension.

2. In Firefox, click View > Toolbars > Customize OR Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout.

3. For the new window that opens, scroll the bottom and you will see drag-able buttons for Css, Proxy, JavaScript, Flash, SilverLight and Images.

4. Drag JavaScript, Java, Flash, SilverLight and Images after the "Stop" button (the Stop button is the one with the X).

Note: Its normal to see some blue (enabled) and some red (disabled) or either all blue. We’ll get back to that in a moment.

When done, click the Done button on the Customize Toolbar window, and you’ll be left with this assuming your Firefox is using the default layout:

5. Click each button so it turns red.

You will have this once you do that:

At this point, JavaScript, Java, Flash, SilverLight and images are all disabled.

Now all you have to do it test it. Go to a content-heavy site like www.yahoo.com and you’ll be amazed at how fast the site loads when you have certain things disabled.

Will certain features of websites be disabled with everything turned off?

Yes. For example, most webmail services will not work with everything disabled. But that’s fine because you can toggle on/off certain things at whim whenever you want. For example, you don’t need Java, Flash or SilverLight to use webmail, so you can toggle on/off whatever you need at the given moment.
